Measuring 3 1/4" long, 2 1/4" wide and 2" tall, this is a Japanese Satsuma box in the shape of what I think is a pine cone, although it may be a shell or perhaps artichoke?....no I think it is a pine cone. It is finely crazed as good Satsuma should be. It was dry footed when it was fired. That means that the bottom of the item was not glazed. It is delicately hand enameled with flowers outlined in black. There are some sponged on gold accents. On the top piece, at the bottom by the back, or stem of the pine cone, is a lengthwise chip. The top piece edge was cut to match the bottom and this may have been an accidental cut as there is a dent that continues for about an inch. Then it must have been fitted to the bottom and the maker realized that his first cut would not match, he would have to go lower at that spot, which he did, without repairing his mistake. The part that looks chipped did not get any glaze. I was involved in the manufacturing of ceramics for 20 years and can easily see this happening. There are no signatures or marks anywhere on the peice. I am guessing this to date from the mid to late 1800's. If any of you can add any more knowledge to this I would appreciate an email. The only price guide I have is an 1981 copy of Treasury of Satsuma, by Sandra Andacht. I am giving you a deal and basing my prices by her book. Happy Collecting!!
