This is the 1868 copy of "The Students Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". It was illustrated by one hundred engravings on wood. The author is Edward Gibbon and it was published by New York: Harper & Brothers, Franklin Square, 1868. Although the use of no earlier publishing date leads one to think that this may be a first edition, on the title page it has the word 'abridged'. So there might be an earlier, longer, edition. The book is in good condition for its age. The binding is nice and tight, but the cover is torn and worn. This seems to be american cloth covered board. American cloth is an early fake leather type fabric that you see many early cameras covered in. The spine is missing this cloth in several places and the corners of the covers are bent in and worn. There is also staining on the front and back. The page before the frontspiece page is water damaged and stained at the top and continues at an ever lessening degree for about five pages more. There is also some water damage on the last two back blank pages. The book measures 7 3/4" by 5 1//4" by 1 1/4" thick and has 677 pages. Happy Collecting!!!!
