This is a very high quality Japanese Satsuma bottle type vase. It is unmarked but has the signature fine crazing in the glaze and the fine detailing in the gold trimmed decoration. This vase shows one person holding out a paper and facing two other people. Perhaps he is teaching them. The vase measures 6 3/8" tall and 2 3/4" in diameter. This is a lovely Japanese Satsuma mug with attached handles. It is marked on the bottom with the cross in the circle which is what we relate to Satsuma, and the maker's mark in a rectangle. I have just found out that the cross in the circle is what is called the 'Mon' of the Shimazu family. Prior to the Meiji restoration in 1872 it was always in Gosu Blue.
