The Maine State Seminary was incorporated in 1856, with an endowment by the State of $15,000. In 1863 a collegiate course of study was instituted, and the name of the institution changed to Bates College, in honor of Benjamin E. Bates, of Boston, a major supporter. About VG to VG+ condition. Slt light, slt dirty, slt edgewear.
