The parasol was an essential part of a well-dressed lady's wardrobe during the 1800's and early 1900's. A 'lady' would never venture out in the sun for fear of ruining her fair complexion. A fashionable lady would never appear without her parasol in the early part of the 20th century. She had to protect her fair skin with was valued as a sign of her leisure life. We don't often see this darker color of mother of pearl. I did some reading about mother of pearl in general and found that there is a MOP made from the black pearl oyster that if correctly cut produces a 'cat's-eye' look. Probably a gift from a loving suitor to a fashionable lady of the late 1800's, this handle has survived until today unlike the parasol itself.
