Large Hardstone Cameo Ring, Vermeil Mount - 19th Century

This is a large ring featuring a beautifully executed Cameo of a left facing female carved from a 3 layered agate stone. It is not often we find fine cameo rings that have survived the years without being worn down, much less a crisp hardstone - so this was a rare and wonderful find for us.

The top white layer has been exquisitely carved in finite detail and sits upon the 2nd layer of chocolate brown (although the camera picks it up as more red, it is in fact chocolate). The under layer is semi translucent red carnelian in color.

The rectangular top sits 7/8" north to south x 3/4" wide and 1/2" high on the finger. The cameo itself measures 3/4" x 5/8". Presently a size 9, we can re-size this ring down as much as 2.5 sizes to suit without affecting the integrity of the shank. There is never a charge for sizing fine jewelry.

The Mount is suitably substantial for the size of the stone and the metal is gold wash over silver (Vermeil).

It would be very hard to find a comparable stone cameo ring to this anywhere near this price but we bought it very well and are passing along the bargain.

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition. A fine hardstone carving in good detail. Very minor wear to the surface of the stone can be seen in the photographs - is expected and well in keeping with the age. The carving itself remains crisp, showing no wear whatsoever. Mount crafted by hand. Weight by scale: 8.2 grams. Markings: The remains of the word SIL for silver. 19th century.
