A Wonderful Antique Cameo of Cupid Dancing on the Moon! 14K

A beautifully detailed depiction of a winged Cupid (Eros, son of Aphrodite - Goddess of Love & Beauty) (Gr. son of Venus) dancing upon the moon! In his left hand, he holds a garland of flowers slung across his arrow. His right arm is high above his head as he makes music with his tambourine.

A whimsical work in marvelous in detail, this carving remains crisp. His facial expression is playful and mischievous while his well defined body is animated. Careful attention was paid to every detail - even to a shadowing on the moon, created by the movement of his legs!

This almost round shape is not frequently found and measures a fraction under 2". There is a generous flip down hanging bale as well as the broaching mechanism with an early safety.

A fine bulls mouth shell cameo, with a high polished back.

CONDITION: Superb. No cracks, chips or repairs. Carving is excellent, with medium relief and is very well detailed. A signature on the reverse cannot be deciphered. Original 14K yellow gold frame was hand crafted for this piece. Frame appears to be early 1900's, but my guess is the carving is earlier. A fine cameo!
