Large Deco Au Necessaire - Jeweled Abalone, c 30's

This gorgeous bag is unusual in that it is of Abalone rather than the more often seen Mother of Pearl. It is also larger than the later copies of the 40's and 50's...and much more dramatic!

It is inlaid with thick beveled slices of dark abalone reflecting beautiful undertones of pinks, greens and silver. Two interlocking rectangles are prong set by hand with more than 80 brilliant pastes.

Measuring a generous 5.5" x 3" x1" the nicely appointed interior houses powder, lipstick, a full size mirror with hidden storage for cash, cards, a key etc behind the mirror.

The pretty woven brass carrying chains are 8" long rising 3.5" from the top of the spring loaded clasp. Mirrored finishing to the sides and top while the back is matte.

CONDITION: Fine vintage condition. The bag has understandably been a favorite! Front of the bag is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks to the Abalone and no missing or darkened stones. Interior is clean. Mirror shows no loss, breaks or scratches. Back of the bag shows friction wear from rubbing against clothing and has been considered in the pricing. Maker unknown. Highly collectible. Art Deco, circa 30's.

The first I've had of this caliber and it's absolutely smashing!
