A gorgeous little piece, these wonderful "necessaires" are hard to come by in good condition!
This little gem was completely hand carved, etched and cut-out on the front of the purse, while the back remains simple in one solid piece of Mother of Pearl.
The subject matter is of a Grapevine, complete with an etched cluster of grapes and detailed surround of leaves on a vine. The elaborate cut work backs onto a leather lining, creating a wonderful contrast for the shimmering MOP.
Interior is kid leather. There is what appears to be a "message" printed with some sort of pen. I cannot make any meaning of it, and believe it to be likely a person's name and some date of occasion. It was very common practice for these to be given as gifts & inscribed with personal notes.
Measuring 2.25" h x 2.75" w, it is 0.75"d. It has a "kissing" style closure.
CONDITION: Excellent Antique Condition. No chips or cracks. Leather lining remains intact. No odours. Closure fully functional. Frame & closure, polished Pot Metal showing darkened patina and little wear. Origin: France. Circa, mid 19th Century, likely 1850-1860.
A beautiful and highly collectible piece!
