Blue and White English Pottery Sauce Tureen with Underplate. The rims are gadrooned, 6-sided. 6 beautifully embossed (moulded) little feet, twig-like handles ending in full-blown roses. The Lid's finial is a bouquet of little posies and lush roses, ending with leaf and flower-shape relief on the lid itself, rim also a gadroon pattern. The plate and tureen are marked with an unusual Ridgway Shield reading: "STONE CHINA J & W. R." Leaning to the right rather than the left as seen in Godden Mark, 3264, "India Temple". John & William Ridgway, Cauldon Place & Bell Works, Shelton, Hanley. Staffordshire Potteries. 1814- 1830. Formerly Job Ridgway & Sons.
"Stone China" was Ridgway's version of Mason's "Iron Stone". The Pattern name is "Oriental Flower Tree" by John & Wm. Ridgway, circa 1814-30. It somewhat resembles the famous Indian Tree Design. The gadroon edge is crisp, bluish-white white. A narrow band of small square arches enhances the scalloped gadrooning. Three peony sprays alternate with three small blossoms around the rim. In the center, a tree with overscaled peonies & flowerets rises from some rocks. The divided trunk of the tree forms a "V" under a rock form which is placed across the base of the tree". Marked J & W.R. Quite similar to Godden MK 3264 Reference: Petra Williams, "STAFFORDSHIRE II: Romantic Transfer Patterns: Cup Plates & Early Victorian China", Rev. Ed. 1981, p.111.
SIZES: The UNDER PLATE is 6-sided and sits on a six-side foot rim, recessed bottom. Diameter is 7-1/4", point to point, or about 6-1/2+" flat-rim to flat-rim. The TUREEN is a tad short of 6" high and measures 7", handle-to-handle.
