CONDITION: NO crazing, NO discoloration, NO damage, NO repairs. Some Loss of gilding to the rims, well-frame and handle and to the 8 flower-containing cartouches around the rim. The floral enameling is still pleasant to the eye, with loss mostly to the greens. That loss more from rubbing, washing and fading (as the painting was applied over the glaze). One surface flake on the crevice of one of the rim scallops....you have to search for this and it is not seen on display. I try to "Hyper" Describe my items.
SIZE & MARKINGS: 11" long; 7" wide, tapering down to the tip which is 1-1/2". The foot base is tear-shaped with a deep recessed bottom. There is a Lovely Lion and Unicorn backstamp with "Stone China" underneath along with an Iron red enamel decorator's mark. Deeply impressed: "REAL IRONSTONE CHINA. F. MORLEY & Co."
REFERENCE: THE DICTIONARY OF BLUE & WHITE PRINTED POTTERY: 1780-1880, Vol. I, p252. "Broad Street, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire. This firm took over from earlier partnerships w/ Wm Ridgway. They acquired the equipment of C.J. Mason & Co., the services of their engraver, and the right to use the name Mason's Patent ironstone China. Many of the earlier Mason marks were used, sometimes with the addition of the new name....the firm is known to have exported extensively to Canada."
