Here is a brilliant 19th century etching of the 12th century Anglican church, St. Magnus the Martyr, which is located near the London Bridge. It is signed in pencil by English artist Hedley Fitton.

The print itself measures 9" x 13" - and is 13 1/2" x 17 1/2" with the slightly worn frame. I believe this fine piece would benefit from professional reframing. Also, please note the color variations in my photos are merely the presence or absence of the flash.

Hedley Fitton (1859-1929) was an editor and illustrator for The Daily Chronicle in his home town Manchester, England. He specialized in architectural etchings and gained notoriety for his finely detailed etchings of well known British and European structures. His etchings include street scenes and prominent cathedrals of such cities as London, Florence, Edinburgh, and Paris. In 1907, Fitton's works won him the Gold Medal awarded by the Société des Artistes Français, and in 1908 he was elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.

Fitton's works are exquisitely etched with an enormous attention to the architectural detail. Variations in shading and the subtle use of light and dark function to give depth and vibrancy to his subject matter. The skill and craftsmanship demonstrated in the etchings of Hedley Fitton, which placed his works in the highest regard among his peers in the etching movement, remain for us to appreciate today.
