Rogers, Smith & Co., was organized in 1857 by William Rogers Sr., and George W. Smith. They specialized in quality silver plated holloware. In 1863 they were bought by Meriden Britannia Co and moved from Hartford, Conn. to Meriden, Conn. By the time International Silver was formed in 1898 Rogers, Smith & Co was almost nonexistent. Which dates this Bridal Basket, which some call a Cake or Bread Basket, to between 1863 and 1877. This beautiful basket is stamped within a shield Rogers, Smith - & Co - Meriden Ct., Quadruple, 1927 and hand etched outside the shield (5 or S) 4914. Quadruple stands for the number of coatings of silver received by the base, 1927 stands for the design number. I believe the hand etched 5 or S4914 was for the actual craftsman who made this piece. This gorgeous basket has a swing handle which will stay up if set. This Renaissance Revival inspired basket is studded with marcasites on the handle, around the sides of the geometric designs on the plate with a few marcasites around the base. The basket plate is 9 inches across, 5 and one half inches tall when the handle is lowered and a full 12 inches tall when the handle is raised. This Brides Basket is in wonderful condition but it is over 100 years old and therefore a few spots of plate loss and minute dents from use are on the plate.
