RARE Antique late19th century Italian or Asian hand carved stone figurine of a sitting monkey holding a bird....likely his lunch for the day. Just a touch of whimsy and comical innocence, this intricately carved monkey & small bird figurine features totally excellent detailing with the natural colors & striations of the stone. Very large painted eyes and mischievous grin, this gray spotted monkey faces forward with eyes wide open. Very life-like, perfectly polished finish and certainly one-of-a-kind!

The area just above the beak of the bird might be broken off but I honestly think it's simply a part of the stone that wasn't polished since it would be quite difficult to break stone or marble. In any case, it's barely noticeable and only being mentioned for the sake of complete accuracy.

The monkey is from an estate collection dating to pre-1900 and has been passed through the generations in our family. With only a small bit of paint missing from the eyes, it's in remarkably fine condition and one of the most perfect stone carvings I've ever seen. It even clearly shows the outline of the monkey's ribs! Measures 3 3/4" high x 3 1/2" across with a 1 1/2" x 3" triangular base.
