This is a hot little number! I just love this coat and, from my research, it could date back to the 1930s due to the design and color of the Saks Fifth Avenue label sewn inside. (It matches an early Saks label posted on the Vintage Fashion Guild website.) Additionally, there are 3 of 4 "bound buttonholes" which were also popular during this era and used by fine clothiers. (One buttonhole was created in an existing seam in the upper yoke.)
This coat is dark brown in color and is made with a thick, heavier fabric -- probably a wool blend. The fabric type isn't marked so I can't tell for sure. There are four matching fabric-wrapped buttons. I believe these are the original buttons but they appear to be dark blue which is different than the color of the coat. (Button fabric may have faded with age as it appears to be satin or similar fabric.)
At first I thought the wrap-around fur collar was mink, but most mink is darker in color so I'm not sure; it may be fox although Alaskan mink can be lighter in color. Regardless of fur type, it is beautiful, clean and in very good condition without any tears or damage. Please be sure to ENLARGE my photos for an up close and personal look.
The coat is fully lined in satin and although the lining is in good condition there is some discoloration -- especially under the arms -- but this isn't too bad.
This coat is clean and in very good vintage condition; it is without marks, tears, spots or damage of any kind. There are two satin-lined pockets and each is in good order and without holes or tears.
Besides the Saks label, there are two other labels sewn inside: one States this is a Carlson Original and another stating this coat was Union Made by ILGWU. (The ILGWU, or the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, was once one of the largest labor unions in the United States, one of the first U.S. unions to have a primarily female membership, and a key player in the labor history of the 1920s and 1930s.)
I'd consider this coat a small or petite; most likely a size 2. The measurements, when laying flat, are as follows: Front & Back Length: 28" from collar to base of hem; Across front bust (underarm to underarm) 20"; Outside shoulder seam to end of sleeve: 21-1/2"; Inside underarm seam to end of sleeve: 15".
Again, please be sure to ENLARGE my photos so you can get a good, close look at the fabric and color.
Thanks for Visiting!
