Being offered for your consideration is this captivating portrait of a young artist in oil dated 1926 and signed. On the back of the frame is written "This is a portrait of Thomas Irwin who was a student at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Phildelphia in 1926. Thomas Irwin lived in Trenton, New Jersey, V. Mc Reader."
The artist's name as so often is the case is a little hard to read. The Last name "Reader" is clear. The first letter appears to be a "V" followed but "Mc" which is clear, but I am not sure what letter follows and before the last name "Reader." I think it is another "C" making the name "V. McC Reader."
This was purchased at an auction from the Estate of a retired Professor from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. His collection of art was impressive. This work not being as well known as other art being offered (such as works by Maritime painter John Stobart) caught my wife's eye. We brought it home and I was captivated. I looked at the young man and knew there was a story there that I would never know. I was glad we bought it.
I don't know what others will see. I only know that if we keep it, that's OK with me. Canvas measures 26" by 22" and Frame measures 30-3/4" by 26-3/4".
