They met at a dance. She was 16 and he was a young man ready to go off to war at 18. It was July of 1914. Mary knew she loved him the moment she saw him across the room. Eventhough it wasn't proper, John walked Mary home that night. He was leaving in the morning for a country he'd never seen before so time was short.

"I shall write to you every day", he said."And I shall cherish every word", Mary replied.

John's letter's and post cards started arriving a few months after he'd left, though not everyday as he'd promised since it was so difficult to get letters home across enemy lines.

Mary saved every letter, she kept them in a box under her bed and wore the key around her neck...waiting for the day he would come back home to her....

I've always been fascinated with the past and antique objects, so when it was my turn to pick a theme for our little group of wire wrappers, I knew I had to do a skeleton key and try my hand at making an old fashioned escutcheon (key hole) . This project was truly a labor of love that took many hours of work and many feet of wire. Full of AA grade amethyst and a stunning mystic topaz heart briolette that hangs in the center of the key.Mystic topaz has been given a treatment to give it it's aurora borealis finish.

The sterling silver chain is 25 inches(63.5 cm), but has an extension to make it longer, up to 28 (71.1 cm) inches long.The clasp is also handmade with some tiny sterling silver beads wrapped to the hook.

This piece has been oxidized to give it an antique feel.
