A Department Store of VINTAGE Kitchenware PLUS linens, drapes, silver, clothing, jewelry, millinery flowers, fabrics, lamps, & MORE!
The framed engraving measures 20" tall x 24" wide; the etching alone measures 15.25" tall x 19.5" wide.
The back of the frame has a sticker from the art company from which it was purchased. My guess that this was in the 50's or 60's. This is what it says:
Michael F. Ingbar Art Co. Inc.; 7 east 20th Street, NY,NY 10003.
This is a unique "metal etching", made in England...creates a beautiful three dimensional effect. Care should be taken to protect its delicate beauty. Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight. Enjoy!
This is what I found out about it on the internet:
The world in plain, sphere, decorated with allegorical figures of the SEVEN known planets along the top; the SEVEN wonders of the world underneath; the FOUR elements on the left; and the FOUR seasons on the right.
Keere, a prolific engraver of maps whose career spanned nearly half a century, engraved this copy of Blaeu's world map in 1608. Ownership of the plate passed on to Jan Jansson a Waesberg. He went into partnership with two English publishers, Pitt and Swart, to produce a twelve volume "English Atlas" to compete Blaeu's. This plate was up-dated for the publication, with a new dedication to the Bishop of Oxford, the re-engraving of California as an island and the insertion of the partial outline of Australia.
Between 1680 and 1683 FOUR volumes of the atlas and text for the FIFTH were printed in Oxford, but the mounting costs were too much. Production ceased, and for the time Pitt was locked up in the Fleet Prison for dept.
The copper engraved map which is either Vintage or Antique, is in very good condition. It has a short crease on the top, off center. It is barely noticeable. The wood frame has a double panel. There are a few knots in the wood. On the upper right and left corners there is an area where there are markings/shallow grooves in the wood. It does not show up in the photo. It can be covered by stain. The frame is heavy and quite handsome. There was another map/companion available with two spheres. The sides did not have any decoration. There would folds in the copper paper. If you are interested, I will check to see if it is still available if anyone is interested. I do not think that it will last long.
PLEASE NOTE: Please do not make a PayPal payment until I confirm the shipping / insurance charges. Thank you.
