French Jet / Bohemian Glass Bar Pin

This late 19th Century Victorian bar pin, would be classified as "mourning" jewelry. Black jewelry was very popular in the Victorian era, after the death of Prince Albert. It was worn in Great Britain for almost 50 years, and was also popular in the United States after the Civil War. The stones are made of glass to resemble the jet that was mined in Whitbey, England. These stones are referred to as French Jet or Bohemian Glass.

The hinge is a late 19C.early type of hinge. The clasp is a "C" clasp, and protrudes past the "C". The faceted French jet glass stones are set in a dark metal lacquered or japanned setting. The pin would have been worn on a shirt collar. It is 2 1/4' x 1/2" and is in excellent condition.
