Title: The Bardo of Promises Kept 5" x 7 1/16"

Artist Statement

Art has always been in the forefront of my mind and life.  My parents encouraged my interest in art and wanted me to go to art school.  I didn't follow their encouragement and took a detour that lead to a career in science.  I believe the science path enhanced my "art senses."  Being an outsider without formal art training gave me the freedom that school-grown artists do not have.

Over the years, my art branched out into many areas.  Pictures merged with words, words led to ideas, ideas gave rise to spirituality, spirituality mingled with philosophy.  This is where my art is today: a photographic collage portraying the human condition.  I believe we are all sleepers trying to wake up.  I hope to help people free themselves by holding before them an "Art Mirror" in an attempt to rustle them from their slumber.

I call my photographs " Bardo Boxes."  I have been making Bardo Boxes since the late 1980's.  The word Bardo comes to us from Tibetan Buddhism.  Bardo literally  means "intermediate state."  The Bardos are transition states, in-between states.  Technically there are six Bardo states in Buddhism, but through my meditations, I realized that there seems to be an infinite number of Bardo states...The Bardo of Sadness, The Bardo of Happiness, The Bardo of Sexual Desire, The Bardo of Domestic Violence, The Bardo of Childhood, and on, and on.  When in a Bardo you can become trapped, imprisoned.  The most difficult prison to escape is a prison without walls.  How can you escape from jail when you do not even know you're in jail?  We are sleeping, ignorant to our true state.  Most importantly, Bardos are self-induced states.  We put ourselves there.  We are our own prison keepers.

My photographs represent souls lost in various Bardo states.  I hope to make the invisible walls that are holding you visible by showing you the lost souls "boxed" in my photographs .  Through beauty and revulsion I hope to help with your exit from illusion and towards your true nature, your unconditional contentment!

I work from an intuitive state.  I do not start out with an idea scaffold and work around it.  Your own interpretation of the photo may be much more interesting than my own!  This is good; it shows that your eyes are opening.  All representations are purely metaphysical.  Any Bardo State representing your own is purely coincidental :)

Technique

I take digital photographs, or scan 35mm photographs of friends, family, and myself.  I layer the different faces upon each other with varying degrees of opacity until a new "soul" emerges.  I place the "soul" in a setting with other photographs, making a photo collage that I feel represents the particular Bardo state.  All the layers are combined into one photo.  More recently I have been representing Bardo states with self-portraits.  My work is always evolving.

Specifics

You will receive the unframed photograph with my mark in the lower right corner.  The photographs are printed on 8 1/2" x 11" archival photographic paper with archival inks.  The photographs are not standard sizes, so I recommend custom framing.  I feel that trying to make the photograph fit a standard size takes away from the integrity of the composition.  The size of each photo will be listed below. The photographic paper can be trimmed by the framer if necessary. I will also include a card with my shop logo and signature, for future authentication.  Shipping is free.

I am offering an additional, more economical, way to own a piece of my work: for 50% off the standard price, I can send the file to you by email.  This file can be burned to a CD on your computer and brought to one of the many locations offering digital photography printing.  You may also send the file to an online site offering digital printing over the web, or have it made into a painting.  There are online services that, for a fee, can take a digital file and convert it into a painting.  I will also mail you a card with my shop logo with signature for future authentication.  You can make as many copies as you like. However, there will be only one card issued per photo ordered by email. During check out please state the preferred order: print or email file, complete the check out and I will revise the purchase order if necessary to reflect the format ordered.

Please be aware that there may be slight color / lighting differences from the actual photo and the photograph viewed on your computer monitor.  Just like televisions in a shop, each shows color / lighting a little differently from adjacent televisions.  So, your monitor may show colors / lighting as slightly off from the actual piece.

Photos should be framed under UV protective glass and hung away from direct sunlight ,and kept away from any heat source and humidity.

Each year I will add new pieces.  I will also retire older pieces.  Once retired they will no longer be available.

Guarantee

If for any reason you are not happy with the print you can return my card for a full refund.  Please note that returns must be declared within 3 days of receipt of the signature card to me by email.   The card must be returned for full refund.

Please feel free to contact me about any questions you may have!  I hope my photography moves you as much as the message behind it impassions me!
