Harold Waite RBA (British 1870-1939); The Old Mill; oil on canvas; signed lower right; in a gilt wood and composition frame; 75 x 55cm (29.5 x 21.5ins) sight (visible canvas) size; 90 x 70cm (35.5 x 27.5ins) overall frame size.

By tradition, the figure on the canal bank is believed to be the artist's mother. The river may well be the Stour, near Sandwich, Kent.

CONDITION: In good, ready to hang, condition: original canvas (not relined); good impasto; examination under ultraviolet light reveals a few (3 or 4) small spots of re-touching but no overpainting; there is a small patch of a dark substance on the reverse of the canvas which does not appear to be covering a hole or tear (there is no sign of any associated retouching in the same place on the front of the canvas). It may be reinforcing a scratch in the back of the canvas or simply a spillage.

BIOGRAPHY: Harold Waite RBA (1870-1939) was a notable member of a highly talented artistic family, which included his grandfather, father, three brothers, a nephew and his own daughter. He was born in Croydon and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1891-1896 where he was awarded both the Turner Gold Medal and the Creswick Prize. He is recorded as having lived at Blackheath and Bayswater in London and, after his marriage, in Kent, at Sandwich and finally in Bearstead, where he died in 1939. From 1924-1935 he was headmaster of Sidney Cooper School of Art at Canterbury. He exhibited 3 works at the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street and 16 works at the RA between 1898 and 1926.
