The Berkey & Gay Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan became one of the leading nineteenth century furniture manufacturers in America. They began making furniture in 1860. They were well known for their high quality and as such won recognition of high merit at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.

This chest is circa 1860-1890 and made of solid mahogany. It is in the Colonial Revival style. Berkey & Gay used 3 labels during their furniture making. The original label was branded into the wood and they used this label until 1905. The top right drawer of this piece has the early branded label.

Berkey & Gay claimed their drawers were "Dust-Proof". Whether or not that is true, the drawers do all have the Dust Dividers. Also, it may have had a mirror on it at one time.

It is wonderful to have a piece this early and with such a beautiful style. It is in very good condition with just minor nicks and aging that a piece of this period would have. There is one area on the bottom left front foot that has been repaired. The bottom of one of the drawers has some writing on it, but I haven't been able to figure out what is says.
