This bedroom suite is probably one of a kind! It dates to the 1930’s. The backs of the vanity and chest are marked: RAINEY SOUTHERN FURN EXP (then another abbrev I can't make out) HIGH PONT (point misspelled) NC. Based on extensive research here is what I found out about this suite.

Apparently this was a sample suite that was made to be shown at what was then called, The Southern Furniture Exposition in High Point, NC. (which later became the International Home Furnishings Market and now is now known as the High Point Market). Furniture companies would make sample pieces to be shown to buyers to see how well it would be received - which would determine if the pieces would be put into production or not. Therefore, these samples were made extremely well. The name RAINEY may be the name of this pattern. I was able to find one that had been sold by the Harp Gallery in March of this year (see attached page from website) which had a dresser instead of a vanity and did not have posts on the headboard and footboard.

After it went into production there was a brass plate on the furniture which read: JIRANEK FEATURIZED FURNITURE DESIGN". "Leo Jiranek (1900-1990), designed this suite and was known as the "Dean of Furniture Designers". Jiranek contributed to more furniture companies than any other known designer, such as Thomasville, Ethan Allen, Kroehler, Heywood Wakefleld, The Lane Co., Bassett, Broyhill, etc. It was during the 1920s that Leo Jiranek’s styles consistently kept Bassett at the forefront of furniture design trend." Because this is a sample suite, there is no brass plate, but hanging on the back of the headboard are what's left of cardboard tags which you can see mentions Featurized Furniture - Lighting - Designed, and also a tag with the name Bassick (they made furniture castors).

The headboard has a built in light! It measures 60” wide by 64” high to top of posts. The footboard measures 60” wide by 64” high to top of posts. The inside mattress size is approximately 55”wide x 74” long (standard double size bed). There are wooden rails for the bed. Queen rails can be put on this to extend for a queen size mattress. With the bed linens on, you cannot tell the difference in sizes!

The stunning vanity also has a built in light inside the middle drawer under the mirror. There is a frosted piece of glass on top of it! It also has wonderful gold colored curved sides going down toward the center drawer. The original mirror is beveled, has an etched floral design at the top, with the sides of mirror a golden color. There are four drawers below. It measures a large 60” wide by 72” high by 20” deep.

The chest has the same shape and design mirror with the etching on top. There are two curved doors on top, followed by 4 large drawers below. It measures 38” wide by 75” high by 22” deep. All hardware on the chest and vanity is original art deco with Bakelite inserts. All door and drawers on both pieces work very well.

As far as condition, the suite has some of the normal dings and scratches and some finish wear that goes along with a suite that has been used – but it is in very good overall condition with such beautiful woods as matched mahogany, walnut burl, zebra wood and inlaid veneer patterns!
