I would like to thank Martin Roberts, an expert in this field, for the following information: "Late 19th century or early 20th century London made side-spouted measure or jug of Imperial pint capacity. Maker most likely Sanders & Sons, or perhaps H Fereday & Sons, both fairly well-known retailers of pewter and other barfittings in the period 1870-1910."
"Monogram will be the initials of the publican at the pub where used. The engraving under the base gives the name of the pub and the address, probably Holland Street, in London. A bit of internet digging may give you the name of the pub, and sometimes one can find the name of the publican too."
"One point of additional interest. These particular bodies were made in the same mould as a style with the taper the other way round - if you hold it upside down, you will see it is a familiar shape."
I believe the name at the top is Sanders & Sons. What little I could make out on the bottom engraving looks something like: The Castle Holland St. and the monogram possibly JWP or JWS.
Note the thumb indentation on the handle! As far as condition, it is in moderate condition with normal pitting, dings, nicks, and dents. But no major problems.
The piece measures 5" high with a top diameter of 3 1/2" and bottom diameter of almost 3 1/4".
Wonderful piece!
