Early Christmas Sale on Royal Doulton Dogs and Jug! Offers Welcomed!
These vintage salt and pepper shakers depict, in two different outfits, the 1920's comic strip character Adamson from Oscar Jacobsson's "Adamson's Adventures" comic strip (syndicated in the U.S. as "Silent Sam"). This was a wordless comic strip, far ahead of its time, the most famous Swedish strip, and namesake for the Adamson Award (which has been won, among others, by Chester Gould, Charles Schulz, Robert Crumb, Herge, Art Spiegelman, and Don Rosa).
Each shaker stands nearly 3 3/4" tall and is in excellent condition, with no apparent chips, cracks, or even paint loss. Close inspection shows only a little crazing consistent with age. These beauties even retain their original corks (although a small piece of one cork is missing - see photo). Bases are marked "Japan."
These were featured in Helene Guarnaccia's Salt & Pepper Shakers II (Collector Books, 1989), p.91. Items depicting this character are very uncommon.
