Early Christmas Sale on Royal Doulton Dogs and Jug! Offers Welcomed!
Nice examples of World War II trench art are becoming increasingly scarce, especially those whose origins may be accurately traced to a specific date and locale; this piece offers both. It is inscribed "USS Gallup, March 2 1944." The U.S.S. Gallup was commissioned just two days earlier, on Leap Day, 1944. On March 2, the ship was en route to the Pacific theater, a part of the fleet bringing General Douglas MacArthur back to the Philippines in fulfillment of his famous promise, "I shall return."
This is a heavy piece, standing just over 1 1/2" tall, 3" in diameter, and constructed from three "six pence" coins and an artillery shell marked on the bottom "A. & J.M.A. MFG. CO., 3 IN MK.5, L.N.P." and bearing the U.S. Navy logo (see photos). It is in fine vintage condition, with only the usual age spots and oxidation, mainly inside (see photos).
Don't miss out on this rare opportunity to own a piece of history!
