c. 1900 Wooden Writing Box ('Writing Slope')

Here’s an attractive writing box, measuring 12” x 8” x 4” deep, made of a darkish grained wood carved in linear shapes which have been painted black. On center top of hinged lid is a brass plate for engraving if you wish (never used). There is a lock, but no key. Inside is completely fitted out: both slightly slanted writing compartments open to reveal storage space for stationery, etc; pen holder is removable, to store stamps, etc.; on each end are fitted boxes to hold inkwells--not included. On the two writing surfaces is replacement green felt to protect the wood and to act as a blotter. There is a wooden pen included. The lid does fit on to bottom, but just slightly less than perfectly on one side. The entire box is in excellent condition, as shown, with no chips or cracks in top or side; bottom has a very tight split, which does not affect the box at all; and only two small ink stains, as shown, on top and one lower side. A terrific storage addition to your desk area.
