Shelby College Havana Scheme State of Kentucky
This is a very interesting piece of history. It is a set of papers from the earliest lottery we have found paper relating to. It was an American lottery in the State of Kentucky called the Havana Scheme. The one paper relates to Shelby College class 310 to be drawn in Covington KY on Friday June 30th 1865. It lists the prizes the highest being $40,000 which in that day and age was phenomenal. The Hammett Co of New York City was the licensed lottery agent. The second piece of paper we have is from Kentucky also but is 1864 It is from the Egerton Brothers General Lottery Agents of Covington Kentucky. It is a letter stating information about earnings and how the whole lottery works, done in pen and signed Egerton Bros. Both papers are of the period and historically very interesting. They measure 11 x 8 and 8 x 9 ¼ inches. The letter has a little light tearing on the edges they both show some light expected age wear overall in very good condition.
