SALE "New Calendar or Salads" selected and arranged by Elizabeth O. Hiller
Here is a wonderfully scarce cookbook published by the P. F. Volland Company in New York, Chicago and Toronto. The full title is “NEW CALENDAR OF SALADS 365 ANSWERS TO THE DAILY QUESTION “WHAT SHALL WE HAVE FOR SALAD?” Although there is no date, this book was probably published around 1920. Softbound with a blue tie for hanging, this beauty is in mint condition with only a few very minor issues. It comes in the original box, which does have two tears on the top portion and two tears on the bottom. The box measures almost 12 inches by 6 inches. However, the book itself is in great shape, with only one area on the cover that looks like a bend at the lower portion of the cover that may develop into a tear if someone is not very careful. The book measures a litlle over 11 inches by 5 1/2 inches. On the back of April Second and the front of April Ninth in the upper right corner there is a one inch square mark that looks like a stamp was placed there, it is a darker color on the page other than that it looks like it has never been used or opened. The box has the same design as the front cover of the book. It also has the original gift card that was included with the original purchase (I show this in one of the photos).
The first page consists of the foreword by Elizabeth O. Hiller and Food Values OF Salads, followed by a section on "How to Measure". Then it has 365 days of Salads, starting with January First and ending with December Thirty First. Three pages of Salad Dressings, all of which look really good, follow this. They include recipes for Whipped Cream Salad Dressing, Bacon Sauce, Chiffonade Dressing, and Cucumber Sauce just to name a few. A two page Index follows this. The last page is a list of Volland Year Books
The Calendar of Salads offers such treats as Lobster and Cucumber Salad (April Tenth), Chicory with Roquefort Cheese Dressing (July Seventeenth), Artichoke And Orange Salad (September Twenty-First) Celery, Almond, Apple And Pepper Salad (November Thirtieth) just to name a few.
