Welcome to my shop! I have experience with pottery, books (and cats) and hope I can help you find what you're looking for!
John Milton wrote Paradise Lost, a 17th-century English epic poem that was originally published in 1667, to explain humanity’s fall from grace and justify God’s ways. The first two books of the famous work are written from the perspective of Satan and his minions. The rest tell the story of the Fall, including Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve, their expulsion from the Garden of Eden and subsequent entrance to life on Earth.
This set of books were published in 6 different formats. This book is from the set considered 'format 1'. This format is distinguished by the cloth, emblematic designs, full gilt and gold edges. This book measures 9-1/2" x 12". The etchings are by the famous French artist, engraver and illustrator, Paul Gustave Dore (1832 – 1883) They make the book a work of art.
All pages are present though pages 1 – 16 are loose from binding. The pages have browned from many years of use, there are some bend to tops of some pages and the cover, though complete, does show signs of wear, stains and looseness. There are 319 pages including 50 full page illustrations. Missing very last end page which is a plain page
Altogether wonderful OLD book that could use rebinding, or use as is. As always, thanx for shopping Katiques! I would be happy to do a two-month layaway on this item also...
