I believe that this is a GAR medal, the back states in pencil "Union Army & Navy, Sons of the Civil War Veterans" ( as seen in picture). It has the Navy insignia (anchor) on the medal with an eagle pin at top. I was told these were issued by the Federal Government and they would denote a certain war.

From my research I have found that these were usually given from the states to the veterans. This has no state designation on it, however, as far as I can see. I was told this was authentic, but I have very little knowledge of war medals. I have priced this accordingly.

I did pull this off its backing to see its inscription which states: "The G/Fox Co., Advertising Novelties, Cinn., OH." Measurements from eagle at top to base of pin is approximately 4". Framed, it measures: 6-1/4" x 6-1/4". It does show wear, and the medal has pulled off the ribbon.
