Museum de-accession of circa mid nineteenth- century nativity scene with a stable made of wood, straw, and moss with hand carved figures which are hand painted.

19th Century wooden carved creche scene made in the Tyrol region of the Western Alps, Austria/Germany.

Carved wooden case with sculpted detail of stone flooring and rough-hewn wooden beams and walls, straw roof, stalls, and feeding trough.

Stable is peopled with hand-carved figures having painted detail of costumes and fine detail of facial features and hair, including surmounted angel with detachable wooden wings, along with three wooden carved lambs, a very large oxen, and ass.

Some figures have museum labels and pencil numbering in subtle locations, allowing provenance to circa 1929.

Measures 16" high x 16" wide, and 14" deep. Condition is excellent, especially considering the age of the set. There are some chips are rubs on the figures as expected, and we did note a few hands have been broken and re-glued, but there has been no re-painting or touch-up to any of the figures.

An except from Wikipedia: "A nativity scene takes its inspiration from the accounts of the birth of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.[1][2] Luke's narrative describes an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to shepherds who then visit the humble site where Jesus is found in a manger. Matthew's narrative tells of Magi who follow a star to the place where Jesus dwells, and indicates that the Magi found Jesus around two years after his birth rather than on the exact day.[3] Matthew's account does not mention the angels and shepherds, while Luke's narrative is silent on the Magi and the star. With no basis in scripture, however, three dimensional nativity scenes (whether static or living) usually bring the shepherds and the angels of Luke together at the manger with Matthew's Magi and the star. Further, and without scriptural basis, the ox and the ass are present at the manger as well as other animals such as sheep, goats, and camels."

Rare to find, early and complete nativity scene, in a beautifully wood carved and well-preserved presentation.
