Final Offering Sale Price ~ Wonderful, rare, and unusual, describe this parian molded hair doll, circa mid-1860s, 13-1/2” tall on original cloth body and wearing period silk costume.

Un-tinted bisque shoulder head, known by collectors as parian, has the single most rare feature of closed mouth with painted teeth. Painted features include dark blonde brows painted thicker in the centers, shaded blue eyes in molded eyelids, black lash lines, red lid lines, accented nostrils and eye corners, and shaded smiling mouth. The modeling of the face has that ‘first out of the mold’ crispness and detail and the painted features exhibit great artistry.

Her molded hair is a profusion of blonde curls with small tight curls around her face and partially-exposed ears. The front of the hair has a molded and painted blue ribbon which supports the rest of the hair which is combed back and falls in soft curls. On the back right shoulder of the plate, there is a very faint surface hairline that does not penetrate the bisque and has not traveled or deepened over the years. It is truly as difficult to photograph as it is to see and it does not illuminate with the black light. This means that there has been no shifting of the bisque which would otherwise expose the unglazed interior of the plate.

The doll is on her original cloth stitch-jointed body with stitched in red cloth boots and brown stitched-in stockings. The lower arms are brown leather and have stitched finger indications. We have not completely removed the gown because the sleeves are very, very tight on the doll and we did not wish to compromise the condition of the gown or the arms. We have opened up the back of the dress and have verified that the body is original to the doll and there is no indication that there have been repairs or patches, and there are no leaks.

Condition: Faint hairline on rear shoulder as described; no other chips, cracks, or repairs.

The silk and lace gown is somewhat fragile and has some fading, but certainly adds interest and originality to the doll and compliments her coloring. She also has her likely original chemise, slip, and pantaloons.

Excellent fine example of a rare parian lady in apparently original costume and condition.
