China (Glazed Porcelain) German “Alice in Wonderland” Shoulder Head by Kestner & Co.

This 4 ¼ inch tall china head, circa the 1860s, is a lovely example by the German Kestner Doll firm. She has a hairstyle with a headband adorned with gold metallic paint. She also has very fine painted brushstrokes around the doll’s hairline. The sculpting of the hair has well delineated curls and brushstrokes. The painting of the hair is so fine and well shaded that it almost appears that there are color variations allowing the hair color to appear dark brunette in some areas. Her face is also artistically painted. She has no chips, cracks, or repairs. On the underside of the right left front edge of the shoulder plate, there is a slight imperfection in the mold that I do not believe to be damage but only an inherent imperfection originating at the creation of the doll head. Any white spots in my photos are reflections of my flash and lights. She would make a lovely doll but could also be displayed just as she is.
