Alt, Beck & Gottschalck Highland Mary China Shoulder Head

This lovely china shoulder head was created by the German firm of Alt, Beck & Gottschalck. According to Mary Krombholz in her book, “Identifying German Chinas: 1840s-1930s,” the firm introduced this mold in 1890. On the back of the shoulder plate is incised #1000 (factory number mark) 4. The head is 5 inches tall and the shoulder plate measures 4 ¼ inches across. I love the detailed brush strokes of the hair on this particular example. She also has deeply molded features and great hair stroke molding. There are no chips or cracks on this head. On the underside of the left back corner of the shoulder plate there is a small flake. This may have occurred in the firing of the head. I believe my photos show this. I believe this head would make a stunning doll or could be enjoyed just as she is.
