This 4 ¼ inch tall china head, circa the 1860s, is a lovely example by the German Kestner Doll firm. She has a hairstyle with a headband adorned with gold metallic paint. She also has very fine painted brushstrokes around the doll’s hairline. The sculpting of the hair has well delineated curls and brushstrokes. This German china head doll, circa the 1840s, is 16 inches tall. He has a china shoulder head with an antique cloth body and leather lower arms. The head has hair brush strokes around the face. A similar doll is pictured on page 154 in Mary Krombholz’s book, “Identifying German Chinas: 1840s-1930s.” The doll is identified as made by the Kestner & Co. porcelain factory circa 1845. This doll head, circa the 1850s, was created by the German Kestner firm. She is 24 inches tall and her head measures 6 ½ inches. Her cloth body with leather hands is older but not as old as the doll. She has painted features with blue eyes and a cover wagon hair style with vertical curls around the back and sides of her head. This 16 inch tall doll is incised only “Made in Germany 10.” She is obviously the early 143 Kestner mold; however, early examples were not incised with the mold number. These dolls, circa 1897, signaled the beginning of the character doll era for German bisque head dolls. She is so lovely and photogenic. I had trouble deciding what photos to use for Ruby Lane.
