About Us
Janice has been designing jewelry for 25 years. Her work is mainly contemporary with some influence of the Native Southwest where she lived for 13 years. She buys her unique stones each year at the International Gem & Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona.
She has taken courses in various aspects of jewelry-making in Zurich, Rio de Janeiro, England and the U.S. She has traveled extensively and lived in the U.S., Switzerland, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Spain, England, and since 1980, Canada. She speaks several languages.
In February 2008, she was the recipient of the First Annual Okanagan Arts Awards for Design. She opened her Studio 203 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna, British Columbia in October 2005 at the age of 78 and is a popular instructor. With her laid-back method of teaching, her sense of humor, and her energy, she is an inspiration to her students.
Artist's Statement:
Many jewelry designers will say the stones they work with "speak" to them. You will never hear me say that; I feel it is pretentious. I have studied stones for many years; I absolutely marvel at the beauty Mother earth has created in the minerals, crystals and precious stones we who are jewelry artists have the privilege to work with. But learning all the characteristics of the stones is what will tell you how to set them, how to bring out their most beautiful facets and will turn the stone in to a fabulous piece of art.
It may sound boring, but in reality, it takes a lot of patience and many years of experience to judge what makes one stone superior to a similar stone which appears mediocre. It is talent, but talent can be developed if the passion is there. To love what one does, to worship earth's treasures in all their natural colors, and to treat the Whole with the respect it deserves, therein lies the artist's strength - and Bliss.
