This elegant and refined piece dates from circa 1920 and was most likely made in Austria/Hungary or Germany. A round, locket-top pendant is covered front and back with enamel of a delicate shade of lilac. The machine turned pattern beneath the enamel of the back and locket top is mandala-like, with curving rays extending from a central double circle. The pattern around the locket top is a series of graceful overlapping curves, rather like a wreath of buttercream frosting. Inside is what I believe to be the original mirror, some powder, and a puff. The metal inside (not shown as I didn't want to remove the powder) is the same pattern as on the outside back and is brightly gilded. There is a loop and a bale at the top for wearing. This is a beautiful find, perfect for a collector of enamel pieces, compacts, or lockets!

Locket is 1 ¼" in diameter and ¼" deep. It is slightly convex on both sides. The bale is stamped "935," which is a silver fineness mark a step finer than sterling and most often used in Europe, particularly Austria/Hungary or Germany. I am not positive that the locket itself is silver, but the edges have the same patina as the bale, which makes me think it is also silver. Condition-wise, the enamel shows almost no wear--a very minor and tiny scratch or two on the back that is difficult to see without a loupe. The mirror needs to be re-silvered or replaced and the puff is deteriorated. The hinge of the locket top is slightly loose, so that sharp tapping will spill a few grains of powder. I would be inclined to discard the powder and puff and use this for a photo locket, but that is up to the new owner. This piece is in very good vintage condition.
