I have never before held in my hand such breathtakingly beautiful jewels ~ these earrings are so finely crafted they make me long for a previous life when such workmanship was the norm rather than the rare exception it is today. Amazingly, these pierced earrings from ca. 1860 have survived the centuries in mint condition. Words are insufficient to describe these little beauties, so I won't even try but let the photos speak for themselves. Do note, however, that the back is identical to the front ~ whoever the jeweler that made them, he clearly never thought to cut corners the way modern manufacturers do. The center drops are genuine amethyst, immaculately shaped and polished. On either side hangs a bell-like structure, and all three drops depend from an exquisitely cut-out and enameled gold connector. Typically of early earrings, the hook is an integral part of the piece that can't be removed. Not counting the wires, the earrings measure 1-3/16" long x 11/16" wide. No markings, which is also typical of the era.
