The buckle or garter motif became wildly popular in the early to mid Victorian Era. The Royal order of the Garter was the highest military honor which a British monarch could bestow. Members of the Order wore a blue buckle on their knee. This would have been immodest for proper ladies, who instead took to wearing bracelets, chains and brooches with the motif.
This set was in pieces when found. The earrings may have been matching bracelet slides. The wider piece of Victorian era bookchain was added to the back of the necklace for extension. My jeweler carefully tested it and states it is 13.5 karat gold with a high karat gild. This was often done in the Victorian Era in America, where 14k was the norm and a yellower, richer look was desired. The set weighs 10.8 grams. The chain measures 17 inches and the earrings are 1" long.
