Please note that I had previously listed these earrings as Georgian Revival. I thought this was true, until a fellow Ruby Lane dealer who is an expert in Georgian jewelry told me she felt that they were the authentic to the Georgian period. Since I had already been planning to go to the Antiques Roadshow in Atlantic City June 6th, I took them with me to be appraised. Since I had a 9am ticket, the appraisers took their time inspecting them under their loupes. Three different appraisers from Doyle New York, Edith Weber & Assoc. and Circa looked them over and concluded that they are genuine mid 18th century examples. They also said the central drops on the earrings were not original to the earrings, but of the same period. They felt that they were Spanish or Portuguese. Jumprings have been replaced, which is common and a minor point. Now for the description-
You will be ready to walk the red carpet in these high karat gold showy earrings. They are a stunning and rare example of Georgian jewelery. The triple drop, or Girandole motif, has been employed for centuries because of it's aesthetic appeal. Certain compositions will always be pleasing, and the Girandole is one of them!
There are multiple hallmarks placed on each part of the earring. This is often found in antique jewelry which is comprised of many parts adjoined by jump rings. It was probably required by local hallmarking laws to stamp each section. One mark appears to be a horse up on its hind legs, and another stamp is a capitol G. The ear wires feature an additional loop in which a ribbon was threaded through, then tied to a hairpin as a safety precaution in case the earring accidentally opened. The diamonds show steely grey against the rich gold metal. They measure 1 3/4" in length.
The earrings are in excellent condition, except for the bottom drop of one of the earrings. It must have gotten slightly crushed at one point, and was repaired. There is some grey solder on the reverse, and this drop is slightly less plump than its mate. The earrings tested at least 20k by my jeweler. They are very yellow gold and appear in person most like the picture of them being worn. They have a combined weight of 14 grams, certainly substantial but not overly weighty on the ear.
I have scoured the internet and have only seen a few examples of jewelry similar to this, and none for sale at the present time. If you seek the rarest in antique jewelry, don't miss the chance to attain these fabulous earrings!
