These jewels provide a glimpse into the opulence of the 18th century! The girandole, which refers to the three drop pendant configuration, defined the style and balanced design of the 18th century jewel. However, the girandole was not a novel idea of the 18th century. The pendant jewels of the Renaissance began this aesthetic rhythm. The effect was so pleasing, the girandole design endured in jewelry design for over two centuries, and is still admired today.
This dazzling set features natural rock crystal which was exquisitely cushion cut, polished and set! Quality and detail like this cannot be replicated. The stones display a black dot painted on the bottom of each culet, a feature of fine early Georgian jewelry. This was done to mimic the look of diamonds. Perhaps the only thing better than these stones are the hand wrought decorative bezels in which they are set. Since they are hand tooled, the bezels have slight variation, yet are so expertly created. I have seen these setting very infrequently, and they are often described as being of 17th century work, but to be conservative, I am describing this set as 18th century. I feel these metalsmith techniques have been truly lost. They certainly didn’t teach these techniques when I was earning my jewelry design degree! The outside drops of the brooch/ pendant are removable and can dangle from the earrings, as shown. The connections are original and beautifully hand made. Even the reverse sides of the dangles are beautifully formed. They are handmade perfection! The earrings had already been converted to screw backs when found, so I had my jeweler put new wires on. I just don’t feel that screw backs are secure. The pendant bale appears to have been put on in antiquity- note the careful contouring of the bale attachment, and the bale itself looks like hand wrought wire. The stones are in remarkable condition for their age. I only see one fine scratch, which I did not notice until I saw the enlarge photo on my screen, on the table of the center dangle. (last picture) All stones appear to be original. One earring top stone appears a little whiter than the other, perhaps a little humidity got under the stone. The bezel is undisturbed, so it is not a replacement. The color discrepancy is not particularly distracting, especially when the earrings are worn and they are not being viewed side by side. The pendant measure 1 1/2" long and the earrings measure 1 3/8" when the dangles are attached.
I could go on about the beauty of this fine set, but I will instead let the pictures speak for the jewelry. If you collect true antique jewelry, these jewels are sure to thrill!
