This Georgian miniature represents a friendship shared between three people in the late 18th century. The French phrase “Gage D’Une Amite Sincere”, which translates to “My friendship is sincere.” Georgian miniatures are usually feature artwork which is steeped with symbolism, and this piece is no exception. The birds hold a ribbon which connects them via an eternal knot. I have seen this described as a lovers knot, but in this case it is clearly not, since the token was given to an individual from two other people. Note that one of the birds stands upon a severed trunk, yet lush new growth can be seen sprouting from beneath the cut. This may speak of the resilience of this enduring friendship despite adversity, and even death. Trees represented the "tree of life". A severed branch was symbolic of mortality, and sprouting new growth meant "life everlasting".
The miniature is in crisp, excellent condition, with no blurring. It is probably painted on ivory, but it does not open, so I cannot be sure. It measures 15/16" long by 11/16" wide. The lovely curved dome is free of scratches or chips, and is likely rock crystal. The initials of the givers and the receiver of the token were artfully hand engraved on the reverse. It was probably worn on a ribbon as a bracelet, but could also be worn on a doubled long chain, with a “dog clip” at the bottom to join the chains and keep the miniature on the chain. It would also look splendid on a belcher or “rollo” chain, threaded through the slide on both sides and doubling back to a clasp, crating a festoon like effect. However worn, this piece is a fine example of Georgian sentimental jewelry in pristine condition!
