This bold High Victorian era brooch has it all! This hand constructed piece demonstrates the masterful design and skill of the Victorian Jeweler. The dimensional layered design is reminiscent of a medieval shield and banner. Note the rosy patina which developed on the underside of the brooch. Yes, gold will tarnish after a hundred years or so, especially near points which are soldered, due to the alloy in the solder. The front surfaces are stippled- note that the stipple on the banner creates a coarser, almost sparkling effect. What isn't stippled is enameled. The brooch totals 2 3/4" in length, and is 1 3/4" wide. The tassel is detachable and is 1 1/2" long by itself. Note that the rim of the tassel is also decorated in tracery enamel. The pin is steel (common at the time, used for strength) and seems floppy until it is clasped with fabric. It weighs 15.4 grams, so it is best suited for heavier weight fabrics. This brooch is a stunner!
