This Mid Victorian Brooch is very three dimensional. A stippled golden globe seems to float within an enameled cage. The black tracery enamel and construction style is typical of the 1880s jewelers work. I actually added the bottom fringe component because it is of the same era and it certainly looks original! However the bottom piece is either gold filled or just the flat top has a sheet of darker metal sandwiched between sheets of gold. Quality Victorian gold filled material is not merely a plating- it was thick enough to engrave. Some say it is rolled gold which is thicker- in any event, the only indication is a corner which someone filed to test it. The top of the brooch tests 14k. I rubbed a corner on the testing stone and see no indication of gold fill. This is a quality piece, and the design is wonderful! it is 1 1/4" wide and just shy of 2" long.
