Oil on canvas laid on wood panel, 12 3/4" by 16 3/4" (19" by 23" as framed), signed at lower left by the artist, RICHARD BURNIER (1826-1884), and bearing a short illegible inscription at right, (possibly the geographical location) and dated there 1865. This is a peaceful poetic classic scene of The Netherlands in the nineteenth century. The subtle autumnal colors recall the Hague School, though, this painting is EXTREMELY darkened by cigarette smoke. The darker, browner images are closest to reality color-wise. The painting even smells smoky. A professional cleaning would transform it. There a a number of edge losses from where framing nails were in contact with the painting--I only have room for one photo of that but would be happy to send more close up images. The frame is not 19th century but does have considerable age. It has a few losses of gesso. The artist is listed but there doesn't seem to be a lot on information about him. His work has appeared at auction in Europe. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
