This is a highly impressionistic work by the noted impressionist of Connecticut, JOHN CLIFFORD HUFFINGTON (1864-1929). Measuring 5 1/4" by 7 1/2" inside the mat, the medium is hard for me to determine exactly but I suspect it's watercolor with maybe a touch of pastel, or, highly thinned oil which has been allowed to soak into a linen-ey type of canvas laid on a thin board. The scene is a forest or edge of a wood; signature, at lower right, is "J Huffington" and the date 1915 appears just below that. The artist was born in New York and his work was shown at the Boston Art Club, Pennsylvania Academy, National Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, and elsewhere. Today he's known in Connecticut for his marine, coastal and harbor scenes, as well as nocturnes, and Huffington's work shows up at auctions in the state of Connecticut. The work is subtle and difficult to photograph. It's best viewed from a distance. Up close, especially from certain angles, one sees some rather long shallow creases, which are visible in some of the photos. Otherwise the condition is good. Email me for more photos of those. The frame is simple and not in great shape; you might wish to reframe. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
