WALTER COLE BRIGHAM (1870-1941) American impressionist art portrait painting identified sitter
Fine Art : Paintings : American : 20th Century : American Impressionism
Oil on canvas portrait in a hand showing training in impressionism, 24" by 18" and 2" frame, signed at lower left in red "W Cole Brigham 06". This, according to a plaque attached to the frame, is a portrait of the-then 27 year old Gracie Lenora Fisher Reese. Brigham was an artist who trained under Kenyon Cox and William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League. He exhibited at the National Academy, Boston Art Club, Pennsylvania Academy, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. A well rounded craftsman, Brigham painted figures, landscapes, and still life works, and executed sculptures and mosaics. Works that have come to light are generally impressionist paintings that show the obvious influence of Chase. This work, found in California, needs professional restoration, as it has suffered some abuse over the years, resulting in a short tear in front of her ear, most significantly a six inch tear from bridge of the nose down, and there is some small paint loss on her jacket, collar area, and at extreme lower right. All of this is eminently correctable by a professional. A general cleaning/revarnish would also be welcomed. Further research could reveal something about the sitter. Brigham's works are apparently especially associated with eastern Long Island, New York. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
