Advanced modernist watercolor on paper, 14 1/4" by 21" and 2" of frame all around, signed at lower right "EVA BERNSTEIN". According to a Vermont relative who has provided me with details of the artist's life, after seeing this on line, this was likely executed in the New York City area, circa late 1940's. The artist was born in Vilnius (present day Lithuania) but was in the U.S. at a fairly young age. Artistically gifted, she traveled to Paris for art purposes. Later in life, she had a Provincetown studio, and was associated for a time with the Woodstock art colony. In her 50's, she expressed a desire to go to college, taking art courses at Columbia, from which she was asked to leave---not because of disciplinary reasons, but because instructors there thought that their teachings would corrupt her unique style. Bernstein's works were exhibited at the Whitney, the Corcoran, in Rochester, and Buffalo, and at a post war exhibit of the works of Jewish-American artists. Unfortunately, the artist didn't appear to have promoted herself in the course of her life, and a 1991 storage fire destroyed a portfolio of many of her works. She apparently also dabbled in weaving and potting. There is a small listing in Falk's "Who Was Who in American Art". There is a framing label on the reverse from The Hogarth Gallery on Third Avenue in New York. Condition is absolutely fresh and excellent, with vibrant colors. Overall, this is a fine work by an underrated, little known artist.......an all too common situation. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
