Original watercolor on paper, 6" by 10" (12" by 16" as framed), signed at lower right "William J. Schaldach, Jr." and inscribed at left "To Nellie, with love, from Billy". This could be an oriole but I can't be sure of that identification! This is a very clean work and it appears not to have been opened since the 1960's or 1970's. A few tiny black spots visible in some photos, I just noticed, are on the glass and not the art itself. The artist is a well recognized painter and printmaker of wildlife and sporting art, including fishing and waterfowl. He was an outdoors enthusiast from an early age. By the 1920's he was studying with John Sloan and George Bridgman in New York, where he was a student at the Art Students League. In the 30's he was an illustrator for Field and Stream magazine. By the late 30's he befriended artist Ray Strang, who invited him to Arizona, where he spent the later portion of his life, painting wildlife subject matter. Schaldach also wrote the biography of major painter of wildlife Carl Rungius. There are a number of auction records for Schaldach's works. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY RUBY LANE SHOP.
